The saveONenergy ABORIGINAL CONSERVATION PROGRAM is designed to help eligible households, social housing providers, and businesses within selected First Nation communities to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and businesses. Taking part can reduce energy demand and help manage energy costs. 

All First Nation communities are invited to apply to be part of the program.  

Residents and businesses in First Nation communities that are customers of electric utilities may also participate in the conservation programs delivered by local electric utilities. For information on these programs, visit saveonenergy.ca. 

For eligible households and social/assisted housing, the program includes: 

1) A detailed in-home energy assessment 
A certified Energy Auditor will look at current home energy use in qualifying homes by considering many factors, which may include:

• Insulation
• Appliances
• Light bulbs
• Drafts
• Windows & doors
• Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC)
• The number of occupants
• Household energy habits.

2) Installation of energy-saving upgrades 
Depending on the assessment and the eligibility of the home and the Participant, homes may be eligible for some the following measures:

Basic Measures:  

• ENERGY STAR^® CFL light bulbs
• Block heater timers
• Smart power bars
• Hot water tank wrap and pipe insulation
• Efficient showerheads
• Efficient aerators

Extended Measures:

• Retirement and replacement of eligible refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, and dehumidifiers with ENERGY STAR® qualified appliance;
• Installing programmable thermostats.

Weatherization Measures (for electrically heated homes):

• Draft proofing (caulking and weather-stripping)
• Attic, wall and basement insulation.

3) Education on how to use upgrades and maximize energy conservation
Energy Auditors will help participants understand how to use the upgrades to save as much energy as possible. 

 
For eligible businesses and Band-owned or operated facilities, such as community centres, the ABORIGINAL CONSERVATION PROGRAM can: 

1. Assess the energy-efficiency of business facilities
   A technician will visit the business and offer a free energy assessment of its lighting and electric water heating. Once the assessment is complete, the business owner will receive a list of recommended retrofits, or upgrades to make their business more energy efficient.
    
2. Identify options  
    A qualified technician will identify the best retrofit options and businesses will be eligible for up to $1500 in retrofits. Businesses that proceed with retrofits above the $1500 maximum will be eligible for further discounts. 
    
3. Install the upgrades
   Once the work order and customer agreements are signed, an appointment will be made with a licensed electrical contractor to complete the retrofit at the convenience of the business owner. The installations are quick and can be made while the business is open.
