The Ontario Energy Board is an independent tribunal that regulates Ontario's natural gas and electricity industries.

Its guiding objectives are to:

• protect the interests of consumers with respect to prices and the adequacy, reliability and quality of electricity service
• promote economic efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the generation, transmission, distribution, sale and demand management of electricity, and to facilitate the maintenance of a financially viable electricity industry.
• promote energy conservation and management of demand for electricity
• promote generation and use of electricity from renewable resources.

The board:

• creates and enforces rules for the electricity sector
• plays a role in regulatory policy development
• monitors electricity markets
• regulates participants in the electricity sector, including distributors, transmitters, generators, retailers, wholesalers, smart sub-meterers, the Independent Electricity System Operator and the Ontario Power Authority.

The Ontario Energy Board also licenses participants in the electricity sector, including distributors, transmitters, generators, retailers, wholesalers, smart sub-meterers, the Independent Electricity System Operator and the Ontario Power Authority.
